I am all about making the whole diabetes process easier. It is bad enough that if I mess up I am going to feel shitty, but stack not knowing what to do when certain situations arise and you end up with a stress bomb no fun crappy day. Knowing as much as you can, and the best techniques for solving everyday diabetic issues can really help make everything you have to put up with that much easier.
And if you are on top of things, doing the latest in greatest in diabetic treatment, the pain can become more of a routine and less of a life changing event.
So, here are a few books I have read that have giving me a little insight, a little motivation, and a little will to keep moving forward.

Diabetes Solution by Richard K. Bernstein
Dr. Bernstein suggests a whole new approach to diabetes management. If you are having lots of swings and are looking to try something different, this may be the book for you.
The main thing that got me into the book is that he offers free chapters from the book. After reading about his new look on carbohydrates and protein, it made a lot of sense and I wanted to find out more. I am always skeptical of people who suggest strange diets, but he does make a good point.
The book suggests that sugar and starch carbohydrates cause the blood sugar to rise so quickly in a diabetic that even the fast acting insulin doesn’t work fast enough to prevent high blood sugars that cause complications.

Think Like A Pancreas : A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin
I original picked up this book mainly because I really liked the title. Inside I actually found some useful information. It’s not just another fluff book with simple steps to follow, but actually filled with unique discussion from real diabetics about the frustrations related to having diabetes.
This book mainly covers how to create a plan for taking insulin, and how to match your dose with your lifestyle. It goes into detail about how different carbohydrates react differently and how physical activity can change the amount of insulin you need.
This book is great for a beginning diabetic, or perhaps someone who is looking to refresh their memory . It covers many basic ideas that veteran diabetics may already have a grasp of.

Type 1 Diabetes For Dummies
Of course they also have a Diabetes for dummies, even one just for Type 1 diabetes. When I was first diagnosed they handed me a huge pink panther book that was filled with all types of stuff, which was very useful at times, but overloaded my head with all this new information I didn’t really understand.
This book on the other hand lays out the basics, and is a great way to get started with managing your diabetes. It provides helpful advice, and tips and tricks that can really give you a push toward your control goal.
There are many books out there about diabetes, over 1,000 on Amazon alone. Over the next few weeks I am going to read a few more and I will let you know what I think. Education is a large part of being successful, so let see how far I can get.
